Carolyn has had a broad and varied career to date, starting in the Catering industry, having achieved her first degree in Catering. While working for the University Halls of Residence in Liverpool, she began classes in life drawing and realised that Art held new and exciting opportunities for her. To this end, she took a foundation course at Withins Lane College, Wallasey, followed by a degree in Graphic Design at Birmingham Polytechnic, which covered photography, illustration, general graphics, desk top publishing, advertising and art history. Carolyn's first teaching experience was for a vegetarian cookery course at night school, where she planned and developed a new course. From here she progressed to a lecturing post with Cobalt (UK) Ltd in Birmingham, where her position involved 40% design and 60% lecturing, with responsibility for equipping and establishing a studio/desktop publishing/design bureau, with 20 students on Employment and Youth Training Programmes. In July 1989, Carolyn joined the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, working in a busy design studio with graphic designers, interior designers, a model maker and audio visual technician. At the Museum, she was involved in many projects, including coordinating and constructing exhibitions, and designing logos, layouts, illustrations, leaflets, brochures, posters and flysheets. She also planned and organised the introduction of an Apple Mac DTP system at the Museum, and trained other members of staff in its use. Her last employed position was with TVEI MEC, from 1991 - 1995, where her work was varied, demanding flexibility as well as reliability, with responsibility for the design of exhibition panels, posters, brochures and other general design, including the TVEI logo and identity. Since 1995, Carolyn has been a freelance designer and trainer. Her work remains as varied and interesting as her customers and she finds that the combination of work areas provides mutual benefits. Training provides her with the human contact that is sometimes missed when working as an independent designer, and her training is enhanced by a fresh outlook to design gained by experience on real design projects. Carolyn specialises in training in graphics and design, including common DTP and graphics package and a graphic design workshop for business people wishing to develop an appreciation of graphic design issues. Her customers include Manchester Markets, Manchester Irish Festival, Topps Tiles, Camelot Theme Park and Jacob's Biscuits. She also teaches a Design & Desktop Publishing module as part of a Graphic Design degree at Rawtenstall College.
