Sally has been actively involved in the
IT industry for over 10 years. She started her career as a Unix instructor for
Hewlett-Packard, and after gaining an MBA moved into a variety of freelance development
and management roles.
She lived for 5 years in the Netherlands and there worked for both IBM and Hewlett-Packard
in a project role. She became the expert on software metrics and quality management of the
projects, as well as the MS Word and MS Access expert in the teams.
Moving back to the UK, she experienced the very different world of an internet startup,
and the world of search engines and site hits.
Sally's particular research interests are in project management. She has experienced a
variety of different methods and styles, and has seen what works well in practice. With
software metrics it is possible to measure key characteristics of the code produced and
feed this into a model that can be used to help with the planning of the next release, and
to keep track of existing work and raise alarm bells as soon as possible. Managing
projects within time and budget is so notoriously hard to do (for example the air traffic
control system) that any techniques such as metrics must be worth investigating.
Technically, her interests are in database work. It seems that many organisations rely
totally on Excel, whereas a simple conversion to MS Access gives a much deeper
understanding of the data, and better input and reporting capabilities. She aims to
demonstrate how easy MS Access is to use and how simple it is to link to a corporate
database such as Oracle or SQL.
She holds an MA from Cambridge and an MBA from Kingston Business School. She is also
qualified as a Further Education Teacher and an NVQ assessor (pending), and is working
towards being a Microsoft Certified Professional in SQL Server. |
